Ramelius Strikes Gold Early

Coonabarabran - October 26, 2009 - Ramelius Gold scored a commanding  seven-length win on Coonabarabran Cup day before the meeting was abandoned due to track conditions.
 
Captain Cavanough made the 700km trek up the Olympic Highway with a quartet of runners - including Steal The Thunder for the Cup - but Ramelius was the only one to make it to the track before stewards called it a day with the rain teaming down and the track deteriorating.
 
The mare again proved her versatility with a win over 1400m on the slow graded track - which looked more like a heavy - she has now won on everything from rock-hard to mud in her career.
 
Backing up from a win on her home track last time out, the five-year-old mare did it with ease to record a fifth win from 22 starts.
 
A consumate ride from Greg Ryan saw the mare settle nicely outside the leader in the early parts before crossing to lead after 400m.
 
Ryan then let her stride out and open a two-length lead over the opposition before easing up for a break around the 600m mark.
 
Challengers approached but Ryan still had a tight grip on the Cavanough owned galloper and when asked for an effort she strode away from the field to win by 7.5 lengths in 1:22.17.
 
The time was more than 2.5 seconds faster than Ramelius Gold's winning time from two weeks earlier, where she beat an average bunch over the same distance but on a good track.
 
The meeting was called off after race two with Harefield Road, Donna's Girl and Steal The Thunder stuck in the stalls, but with a raft of gallopers coming into race fitness, look forward to plenty of runners and plenty of winners over the coming weeks.
 
The Cavanough team now has seven winners for the month of October and 14 for the new season.
